Gwen: An Example from Los Angeles for All-Show Steakhouse Owners to Follow

Social media has recently been occupied by chefs who try to show off their meaningless knife skills while trying to slice some meat, and those who try to look different by boiling meat in butter (!). Ultimately, numerous restaurants call themselves steakhouse but cannot go beyond buffoonery at the expense of their quality.

Gwen: An Example from Los Angeles for All-Show Steakhouse Owners to Follow

Located at the famous Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, Los Angeles, Gwen stands out as an example of how a proper steakhouse should be. Eventually, it quickly gained respect in this field although it has been serving to its visitors for less than a year.

Curtis and Luke Brothers are at the helm of the restaurant. They became familiar with animals in their childhood years passed on their Grandmother’s farm in Austria where they gained first-hand experiences in farming. This consequently inspired them to give the restaurant the name of the hero of this story, their grandmother Gwen.

The restaurant-café brings the chefs’ traditional butchery rituals into a quite chic and just as much mystic ambiance. With the aim of offering the best meat raw or cooked, the venue consists of a restaurant space along with a store that offers a wide array of products.

When you step into the restaurant, you will be welcomed by giant crystal chandeliers hanging high above from the ceiling, dry-aged displays with a stunning variety of products, and especially an Argentinianasador,” namely an open grill with a dancing wood-fed fire which is in the center of this show.

With about 20 tables it houses, the restaurant may host up to 80 people. People may choose between tasting menu ($185) or A La Carte menu.

While the dishes served to our table included above-average presentations of Mediterranean horse mackerel and octopus; of course, the star of the night was Australian Blackmore wagyu as the expertise of the restaurant worked its magic!

Flat iron, a dish with thin slices of steak, was literally the best one I had in the US; considering that the ones I had in Japan are in this competition of course!  With its proper cooking techniques that successfully release the flavors locked up in meat, Gwen apparently outperforms both Peter Luger, a named steakhouse in NYC, and the globally famous Wolfgang Puck restaurant chain. The Californian wines paired with steaks offered a dazzlingly harmonious experience. After all this gastronomic experience, all I could say at the end of the dinner was “I wish that all-show steakhouse team could have a dinner at this restaurant for once!”

Gwen gave a five-star fine-dining performance outstanding with many qualities it masters such as taste, service, hygiene, ambiance, customer profile and so forth.

Those who would rather have a real meat experience than see a mere showmanship are recommended to include the restaurants in their L.A. plans.

Bon appétit and enjoy the taste of life…
